Wash and Care Instructions

Always wash your nappies before use.

For pocket nappies separate the inserts from the outer cover and wash together. Velcro tabs must be folded back prior to washing as they can snag other items in the wash and cause a rather long snake! Hemp and Bamboo require quite a few washes before they reach peak absorbency. Bear this in mind when using the product in the first few wears, and maybe use them at home to start with.

You will need to use a liner when using nappy creams. Creams can stain the nappy and cause build ups which can inhibit absorbtion. We recommend Curash powder for nappy rash. This can be used without a liner.

Avoid using excessive heat.  Make sure you wash at a temperature under 70 degrees celsius. Drying in the dryer is fine for the inserts, but the covers can deteriorate when exposed to high heat for long periods. Sunshine is certainly the most effective method! If there is no sun, then a drying rack or heated towel rail work fine as well, otherwise if you need to use the dryer make sure it is on a delicate setting.

Dry pailing your nappies is recommended. No soaking is required! A pail liner will save you washing a smelly bucket and make it easier on washing day. Don’t use natural soap products, bleach, fabric softener as this can lead to deterioration.  An oxygen whitener such as Napisan is fine but make sure the cycle is rinsed twice at the end as any residue could cause baby to rash.

Knock off solids into the toilet. Newborn poos can be rinsed off the nappy, wrung dry and popped into a dry pail with a lid.

Steps for Washing

Put separated covers and inserts into the machine, along with the pail liner. Don’t forget to fold back velcro tabs.

Rinse the nappies first on a cold without detergent. This will take any remaining residue off the nappies. For the wash cycle, use a biodegradable detergent, without enzymes. We recommend using only ½ the required amount, as too much detergent can lead to a build up on the nappies, causing them to smell, and leak. A temperature around 40-60 is adequate. A double rinse at the end of the cycle will ensure all of the washing powder/liquid is rinsed out.

Absorbency

If you find your nappies are not absorbing at their best, we suggest applying a little bit of dish detergent to a clean, dry nappy, moisten with water, lather, rinse and then launder as usual.  The dish detergent works very well to rid any remaining natural oils.  This process can also be followed if you find your nappies have built up residue (usually from laundry detergents over time, or from creams or ointments) and absorbency seems to be hampered.

We do not recommend baking soda and vinegar "strip" washes. Some warranties such as Bum Genius are void when using this method. Prolonged use of these ingredients may lead to deterioration of your nappies.
