What are the benefits for using cloth nappies?

For so many Mum’s even thinking about washing nappies like their mothers used to do is a real turn-off,  but there are a few things to take into consideration before switching off completely:

• New designs are easy to use
• They are kind to the environment
• They are softer on your baby’s bottom and are chemical-free
• Easy to launder – no soaking required and fast drying
• They will eliminate nappy rash
• Potty training can happen earlier
• Reusable – can be used for the next child
• They will save you money!

Environment
A baby will use approximately 5,000 nappies over their nappy lifetime.  That produces a huge mountain of waste equivalent to 130 rubbish sacks full.

Comfort
Cloth nappies today are designed with comfort in mind. They have stay dry layers that wick away moisture quickly so babies skin stays lovely and dry.

Health
There has been an independent survey carried out by Bristol University suggesting that infrequent nappy changes are the most common factor in nappy rash.  Teething, reaction to certain foods, detergents and some chemicals used in disposable nappies, wipes and lotions are also other causes.

Financial Costs
Infants wear nappies for approximately 2 1/2 - 3 years. In this time they wear around 6000 nappies. There are a variety of figures around for the cost of cloth versus disposable. The cost of disposable nappies and the accessories that go with it, such as wipes and bags for 1 baby over an approximate 2 ½ year period is $3000-$4000.  With more than one child in disposables this adds up to quite a substantial sum.

A set of 12 cloth nappies is on average around $400. If you are buying each size you are looking at around $1300 and that’s including extra inserts for night and spares.  If you are buying a One Size nappy to last from birth through to toddlerhood you will have quite substantial savings!  Cloth nappies can also be used again for the next baby.
